How to Use Planimeter in Natural Gas Flow Measurement

Posted on | September 28, 2009 | No Comments

Orifice meters used to measure the volume or flow rate of natural gas, in addition to using computer flow units as a means of output data, also prepared a back up facility Chart Recorder. This chart used to record fluctuations Static Pressure (P), Temperature (T), and Differential Pressure (DP) for 24 hours. To be able to know the amount of each transmitter used a planimeter aids. This tool is more commonly used as a tool to calculate the area of a region on a map.

Chart Recorder

Flow / Chart Recorder is used as a backup tool for electronic flow measurement computers on meter system, both in customers and with the supplier (off-take). Chart Recorder is commonly used brand of ITT Barton or Foxboro.

These types of recorders are distinguished on the basis of the number of pen used, some systems that use charts include:

  • Recorder pens 2 (P + DP)
  • Recorder pens 3 (P (blue) + DP (black) + T (red))

where:
P: Pressure
DP: Differential Pressure
T: Temperature

Then the notes / charts in the chat recorder is read with the aid of planimeter so that the average value of differential pressure (Differential Pressure / DP), pressure (Static Pressure / SP) and temperature (Temperature / TT) can be obtained by more carefully.

To measure the measurement values and convert the reading on the chart recorder is to use a planimeter and then do the following steps:

  • Calculate the measured area = A cm2
  • Calculate the value above into the diameter = Ö A / 3.14 = B
  • ((B – 3.5) / (9.2)) x range = average price measurement

For example:

  • DP measured area = 250 cm2
  • Range DP = 0 – 100 “H2O
  • Enter the above values into diameter = Ö 250 / 3.14 = 8923
  • ((8923-3.5) / (9.2)) x 100 = 58,946 “H2O
  • Value 58,946 “H2O is the average per-day DP,

Based on the results of these measurements, with a known  and pipe diameter and gas analysis data, it can be calculated that the amount of gas flow calculations using AGA 3 standards.

That must be considered in use when measuring planimeter chart recorder are:

  • Users in a state of calm
  • Not in a hurry
  • Avoid parallax errors
  • Repeated readings of at least 3 times then averaged the results.

The calculation of the above also applies to the average counting chart recorder readings with different diameters and brands.
