Chemistry Nobel Prize 2009

Chemistry Nobel Prize 2009 awarded to three scientists who are both studying the ribosome, the cell that produce proteins. They are Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Thomas Steitz of the U.S. and of Israel’s Yonath.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Science called the discovery of the three scientists are the foundation of human understanding of life. Ribosome is one important part of living body due to produce proteins that control how the body works plants, animals, and humans.
They managed to uncover the parts of atoms forming the ribosome. Separately, three ribosome research using a method called X-ray crystallography to determine the position of individual atoms that make up the ribosome and create three-dimensional models.
“This model is now used by scientists to develop new antibiotics, which directly help save lives and reduce human suffering,” the Nobel jury said. Therefore, products made antibiotics currently treating deadly diseases by bacterial ribosome function.
Ramakrishnan, Indian-born man who now is a 57-year-old senior scientist and head of Research Division Structure at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology Cambridge, England. Steitz (69) who was born in Milwaukee is a professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale University. While Yonath is professor of biology at the structure of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rohovot, Israel.
They will share the prize worth 10 million kronor, or about Rp 14 billion. Each will also receive a gold medal, certificate, and will receive prizes in the annual special event in Stockholm, Sweden on December 10.
